TMNT - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

History of the brand

The first licensed Ninja Turtles series toy was a role-playing game by Palladium Company. Then Dark Horse began to produce figurines after comic strip. When toys were in great demand the advertising agent Mark Friedman contacted the "parents" of turtles Laird and Eastman, inviting them to expand sales. But it turned out to be not that easy. Many toy companies refused to enter into the contract, considering the production of turtles as being not profitable. Only Playmates Toys, a small company originating from California, agreed to launch a large line of toys though with the only condition: cartoon premiere after the comic strip should be scheduled prior the start of production.

Work on a series of toys began with the selection of creative and talented people: famous advertising agent Jerry Sacks engaged the best animators of Murakami-Wolf-Swenson Productions, headed by Fred Wolf. Apart from them, creation of the first toys was also responsibility of: the head of Marketing Department, Karl Aharonian, Vice President of sales, Richard Sallis, and Playmates VP, Bill Carlson. Writer John Schulte has developed a back-story, which came to life on toy packaging of the whole line.

In December 1987 the first TMNT cartoon appeared, and in the summer of 1988, Playmates Toys Company released the first line of toys. A premiere series included: Ninja Turtles, Splinter, April O’Neil, Shredder, Rocksteady, Bebop, and infantry soldier. Transport was also released for the series: Cheapskate, Turtle Blimp, Foot Knucklehead and Turtle Trooper. All vehicle sets had a small directory included.

To date, TMNT by Playmates Company is the only brand that produces high-quality toys after the eponymous movie.

For the whole period the brand has produced a large number of toy collections:

• 1992 Cartoon Turtles and TMNT III
• 1993 Ninja Action
• 1994-1995 Mini Mutants
• 1997 The Next Mutation.

New series of toys were produced until 1999, since then Playmates Toys Company didn’t produce new products. Until in 2007 turtles got a new wave of popularity caused by TMNT animated movie, triggering production of action figurines of upgraded heroes.
